Old School New Body aims to be that program. But does it work?
Steve Holman and his wife, Becky Holman, created this fitness training program. Steve has worked for over 25 years as the Editor-in-Chief of Iron Man Magazine and has intensive experience in the field of health and fitness. They co-wrote the book with John Rowley, who is also a fitness expert.
This book is great for you if you are over 35 years old and trying to lose weight. But this book is more than just a fat loss program; it’s a book about being and living healthier. What is the Old School New Body F4X program?
You can begin the program within 30 minutes of reading it. You can immediately apply the information in the book once you have read up to Chapter 2 “The F4X LEAN Workout.” F4X is an abbreviation for Focus 4 Exercise, the trademarked training program in Old School New Body.
Once you learn the basic science that built the F4X system, you learn the first phase, which is F4X LEAN workout. This workout is the one you take if you are a beginner or if you have not exercised after a long break from the gym.
The F4X LEAN workout contains four exercises:
Incline presses or flat bench presses
Bent over rows
Dumbbell upright rows
As a beginner, you can opt to do a more simple version of F4X LEAN. Pros #1: The chapter layouts focuses on your progress
The chapter layout may seem odd at first glance. Steve explains the first F4X phase, and then he talks about motivation and avoiding joint pain in the subsequent chapters. After that, he explains the second phase, which is F4X SHAPE. Then he talks about diets, alcohol consumption, and supplements, before going on to explain the third phase, which is F4X BUILD.
This chapter layout is designed to help you progress through the program. When you do the F4X LEAN workouts, there is a chance that you lose motivation along the way. Steve dedicates an entire chapter to help you stay motivated so you continue to the second F4X phase if you need it. This layout helps you follow the program in a step-by-step manner.
Pros #2: Know the exercise to do before all other exercises
There is a reason the F4X workout takes only 30 minutes to do. The workouts are arranged in a specific order, so you get the most fat burning, muscle growth, and anti-aging benefits with the least amount of effort and time. There is one exercise you must do, before all other exercises, that boosts an important hormone in your body, providing you with the benefits above.
This one exercise boosts the effectiveness of other exercises you do. This tip has been valuable for me because now I always start my workouts with this exercise, and I am starting to see my body get a toned and muscular shape. I won’t say what the workout is because it’s better to get the info straight from the book (but if you look closely on this page, you can find out what it is).
Pros #3 No need to go to the gym
If you are like me, you want to save as much time as possible so you can do other things than workout. There is a chapter in the book titled “Instant At-Home, New Body Solution”. This chapter informs you how you can do the F4X workout at home using one simple equipment. You can buy this equipment at a low price, or you can make one yourself.
With this information, you don’t have to visit the gym to exercise. Steve has made the F4X system to be as easy as possible so people will have a good time when they follow the program. When you feel that you are good at doing the exercises, you stay motivated to do them, and you start losing weight.
But of course, no program is perfect. Let’s talk about the flaws of this program:
Cons #1: There are no workout video tutorials
Video tutorials are very helpful when you want to see how a workout should be done. Videos help you to know the proper movement and timing, so you avoid injury and get the most out of your workout.
Old School New Body doesn’t supply video tutorials. It does explain the workouts using illustrations. But I feel that a video demonstration would be more instructive to the reader than only pictures.
The upside to this cons is that the price would be higher if there were video tutorials. Since there are not any videos, the price of the program is relatively affordable. It is accessible for most people.
Cons #2: Only a few menu plan examples
The book has only one chapter that explains what you should eat. The focus of the program is on the workouts, but having detailed meal plans are also important to help the reader. That said, Chapter 9 does contain the exact meal plans Steve and Becky follow, so that could be enough to begin.

Cons #3: There are a few typo errors in the book
If you’re a perfectionist, you may be bothered by the few typo errors in the book. It’s not a deal breaker, but I wanted to give you a heads up. The plus side to this cons is that Steve writes in a casual and conversational style, so the book is easy and light to read.
